Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (Continuous Roll): Kathryn Andrews

For Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (Continuous Roll), the audience will be invited to participate in a holiday-extravangaza performance work that incorporates dance and projected video.

Kathryn Andrews was born in Mobile, Alabama, and creates sculptures, performances and other works that explore how materials exist in systems, or economies, of representational relationships. Her highly finished forms draw from a minimalist language, and are often conceptually activated by the inclusion of found, acquired, and rented objects. In her practice, the readymade not only serves as a vessel through which materials are imported from the outside world, but as way to examine pre-existing social contracts and infrastructures. This year, Andrews had a solo exhibition Special Meat Occasional Drink at Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and participated in Station to Station, A Doug Aitken Project. In 2012, she had a solo exhibition D.O.A. | D.O.B. at David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles and was included in Made in L.A. and When Forms Become Attitudes, CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco. Her performances have been shown at Art 43 Basel: Graystone Mansion in conjunction with LAXART, Los Angeles; and the ICA, Philadelphia. A two-person exhibition with Alex Israel at Gagosian Gallery, Rome is planned. Andrews, who lives and works in Los Angeles, received her BFA from Duke University and her MFA from Art Center College of Design.
