Our Programs

Oregon Contemporary produces powerful, visionary art programs for the communities of Oregon. We present 50%+ BIPOC artists in each program annually, making our North Portland gallery one of the most inclusive and representative in Oregon. We present a wide variety of programs, particularly art exhibitions of large scale work. We transform our space into new experiences for visitors with every show. Additionally, we often have works on view in side galleries in the building or our courtyard. Learn more about our programs below.

Oregon Contemporary
Artists’ Biennial

The Artists’ Biennial is a survey of works by visual and performing artists who are defining and advancing Oregon’s contemporary art landscape.  Initially started by the Portland Art Museum as the Portland Biennial in 1949, Oregon Contemporary began the new iteration in 2010 and expanded to include artists Oregon-wide in 2016.

Curator in Residence

The Curator in Residence program is the first of its kind in the region. Through the CIR program, audiences are inspired by viewing local, national, and international work in their region and the arts community establishes new connections throughout the world.

Site

Site is a series of site-specific large-scale solo exhibitions by artists of the Pacific Northwest. Site was created to utilize Oregon Contemporary’s strength as a large-scale venue and give artists an opportunity for a solo exhibition and the ability to make new work as they expand and grow their creative practices.

Special Exhibitions

Oregon Contemporary presents visual arts exhibitions beyond those of our core programs, creating opportunities for regional artists to present their work as well as for national and international exhibitions to be brought to Portland’s audiences.

Special Art on Loan

Oregon Contemporary invites collectors to loan works to display for audiences to view for free during exhibition hours. The program presents works by recognized artists from around the world.

Platform

Oregon Contemporary offers the opportunity for organizations to present programming by providing affordable space in the form of low-cost space rentals and more. We provide a platform for arts and culture events, Kenton neighborhood events, with a particular focus on supporting the communities of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities.
